The Challenge

Chronic Leakage in Potable Water Infrastructure

The Hoch-Behälter is a critical potable water reservoir supplying the Usingen region in Hesse, Germany. Over time, persistent leaks developed in:

  • Construction joints between the reservoir walls and floor slab,
  • Microcracks formed due to settlement and thermal cycles,
  • Interfaces between old concrete and rehabilitation sections.

This led to:

  • Uncontrolled water loss, reducing storage capacity,
  • Risk of contamination from surrounding groundwater,
  • Moisture-related degradation of reinforcement,
  • Regulatory compliance issues for drinking water safety.

Due to the reservoir’s essential role, a non-toxic, non-invasive repair solution was required without emptying or replacing the structure.

The Solution

EURAS® Gel Type B – Safe Sealing for Drinking Water Facilities

After technical analysis, EURAS® Gel Type B was selected for its:

  • Proven hydroscopic properties to displace and stop active leaks,
  • Elasticity to handle settlement and temperature-induced movement,
  • Compatibility with potable water environments,
  • Deep penetration into fine cracks via high-pressure injection,
  • Non-shrinking and non-toxic formulation.

Execution Methodology

Implementation Details

The work was performed during scheduled maintenance windows to avoid service interruption:

  1. Mapping leak paths and microcracks with moisture detection tools,
  2. Drilling of targeted injection ports in critical joint interfaces,
  3. High-pressure injection of EURAS Gel Type B up to 140 bar,
  4. Monitoring gel flow and return pressure to ensure complete filling,
  5. Final watertightness verification and certification for potable water use.

Outcome & Performance

Outcome

  • Permanent sealing of all active leaks,
  • Restoration of full reservoir capacity,
  • Protection of concrete structures and reinforcement from moisture damage,
  • Full compliance with drinking water standards,
  • No need for excavation or replacement.

Why It Matters

Engineering Takeaway

The Hoch-Behälter project shows how EURAS® Gel Type B is uniquely suited to potable water infrastructure, delivering:

  • Safe, elastic, and non-invasive sealing,
  • Compatibility with regulatory standards,
  • Reliable performance in saturated and dynamic concrete structures.

EURAS Gel provided a long-term, certified solution for critical water supply infrastructure.
