The Challenge

Emergency Leak Threatening Operational Safety

At the PAP Lisina facility—part of the HE Vrla hydropower system in southern Serbia—active water ingress was detected in the valve chamber and adjacent tunnel areas. The leaks were considered critical due to:

  • Proximity to pressure regulation systems,
  • Presence of aging concrete and prior patch repairs,
  • Continued water exposure accelerating deterioration,
  • Difficulty accessing the internal cavities where water was entering.

This presented a risk of structural weakening, service interruption, and escalating repair costs if not addressed immediately.

The Solution

EURAS® Gel Type B for Deep Penetration and Active Displacement

EURAS® Gel Type B was chosen as the most viable option due to its:

  • Ability to be injected directly into water-bearing cracks and porous concrete,
  • Performance in active leak conditions without drying or sealing off the area,
  • Elastic, expanding properties that allow it to flow into inaccessible voids,
  • Long-term chemical and thermal stability (-25°C to +100°C),
  • Full resistance to groundwater acidity and aggressive particles.

This made it ideal for a fast, high-impact intervention in one of the plant's most critical zones.

Execution Methodology

The EURAS-certified team conducted:

  1. Targeted drilling to access water ingress zones without dismantling infrastructure,
  2. High-pressure injection of EURAS Gel into cracks, fissures, and joints—up to 150 bar pressure,
  3. Monitoring of flow reduction and gel expansion to confirm proper filling and saturation,
  4. Post-injection testing to verify long-term waterproofing and adhesion under load.

Despite the complexity and urgency, the intervention was completed within a 48-hour window.

Outcome & Performance

  • Complete elimination of active leaks in the valve chamber and tunnel walls,
  • No interruption to hydropower operations,
  • Restoration of structural integrity and protection from corrosion,
  • Cost-effective resolution without the need for excavation or replacement.

Why It Matters

Engineering Takeaway

The PAP Lisina project underscores the value of fast-curing, adaptive waterproofing technologies in emergency scenarios. EURAS® Gel Type B demonstrated:

  • Reliable performance in inaccessible and high-risk leak zones,
  • Strong compatibility with aged and moisture-saturated concrete,
  • Rapid deployment under live plant conditions.

This project reinforces EURAS’ position as a first-choice solution for hydropower plant maintenance and protection.
