The challenge
Persistent Water Ingress in Critical Water Treatment Infrastructure
The Episkopi Desalination Plant is a vital facility providing potable water to coastal Cyprus. Over time, the plant developed chronic leakage in:
- Underground service galleries,
- Construction joints between slabs and walls,
- Microcracks in the concrete exposed to saline and aggressive water.
The leaks created:
- Standing water in confined maintenance areas,
- Corrosion risk to equipment and structural reinforcements,
- Potential contamination concerns in sensitive treatment zones,
- Access constraints preventing conventional repair solutions.
Due to the plant’s critical role in regional water supply, a fast, non-disruptive repair method was required.
The solution
EURAS® Gel Type B – Sealing Leaks Under Saline Conditions
After technical assessment, EURAS® Gel Type B was selected because of its:
- Hydroscopic swelling action to displace water in live leaks,
- Elasticity and adhesion to withstand settlement and vibration,
- Compatibility with saline water exposure,
- Deep penetration capacity through high-pressure injection.
Execution methodology
The sealing was performed during scheduled maintenance without interrupting plant operations:
- Mapping infiltration areas in the galleries and interfaces,
- Drilling injection ports to target crack networks,
- High-pressure injection of EURAS Gel Type B up to 150 bar,
- Monitoring gel flow and back-pressure to confirm saturation,
- Verification of watertightness and structural integrity.
