The Challenge

Water Ingress in Cooling Galleries

Kraftwerk Hamm-Uentrop is a major thermal power generation site in Germany with critical cooling water galleries housing large pipe penetrations and service tunnels. Over time, active leaks developed around construction joints and old sealing rings, causing:

  • Persistent standing water in inspection tunnels,
  • Risk of corrosion of embedded pipes and fittings,
  • Potential impact on operational safety and regulatory compliance,
  • Inaccessibility for conventional sealing methods without partial shutdown.

Given the plant’s importance and environmental obligations, a fast and lasting repair was essential.

The Solution

EURAS® Gel Type B – Non-Invasive Sealing Under Operating Conditions

Following an engineering assessment, EURAS® Gel Type B was chosen for its:

  • Hydroscopic swelling behavior that displaces active water,
  • Penetration into fine cracks and voids behind linings,
  • Elasticity maintaining a seal under thermal cycling and vibration,
  • Compatibility with wet concrete and corroded surfaces,
  • Non-toxic composition allowing safe use in enclosed industrial spaces.

Execution Methodology

Implementation Details

The intervention was planned for minimal operational disruption, including:

  1. Precise mapping and marking of infiltration zones around pipe penetrations and gallery joints.
  2. Drilling injection ports and installing special packers along the affected areas.
  3. High-pressure injection of EURAS Gel Type B at up to 140 bar to ensure deep distribution into micro-cracks and cavities.
  4. Monitoring flow reduction and gel return to verify complete fill.
  5. Final performance verification with leak tests and visual inspections.

The project was completed without the need to shut down critical cooling systems.

Outcome & Performance

Outcome

  • Permanent stoppage of all active leaks in cooling galleries and penetrations,
  • Restoration of safe and dry inspection conditions,
  • Protection of concrete and steel components from further deterioration,
  • No operational downtime or environmental impact.

Why It Matters

Engineering Takeaway

The Kraftwerk Hamm-Uentrop project highlights EURAS® Gel Type B as a proven solution for industrial water ingress, combining:

  • Non-invasive installation,
  • Compatibility with complex pipe penetrations,
  • Performance under vibration and thermal cycling,
  • Long-term sealing of aging infrastructure.
